From natural cane to oboe reed

Arundo donax is a natural material used for double reeds. Differences in density and fibre structure play a part in response, resistance and workability.

Material selection is the beginning of the story, not its entire quality claim. Each piece still needs to be inspected and reassessed while it is worked. Natural variation is a property to manage through craft, not a flaw to hide.
